One of the lessons that the last few months have taught us is that remote work is here to stay. Love it or hate it, where and how we work is changing. Let’s take a look at the past, present, and future of remote work and how SaaS tools, like CloudApp (a Cervin portfolio company), are helping drive the transition.

The past

Many companies started experimenting with remote work arrangements years ago — even before the global COVID-19 pandemic. Surveys show that in the pre-COVID world, 57% of Gen Zers, 50% of Millennials, and even 46% of Gen Xers worked from home at least once a week. And one in four office workers claimed to work from home half of the time, if not more.

Remote work offers numerous advantages. A study by Owl Labs found 83% of survey respondents agree that the ability to work remotely would make them happier. This is because remote work allows for greater work-life balance, freedom, and flexibility. Research also suggests that happy employees work more productively, are more creative, more open to collaboration, and more loyal than their in-office counterparts.

The present

The pandemic has forced huge sections of the population to work remotely for the foreseeable future. This is a huge shift for many companies and workers. It has forced us to adopt new procedures and tools so we can communicate and collaborate while working exclusively from our homes. The use of video conferencing, project management tools, messaging apps, and document distribution platforms has gone through the roof. As time goes on many of us are still adapting and finding new ways of working efficiently.

The future

While some people are counting the days until they can return to “normal” and to the office, there are, not surprisingly, a lot of people who would like to stay working remotely some, if not all of the time for the reasons previously mentioned. According to a study by PWC, 72% of respondents say they’d like to work away from the office for at least two days a week.

There’s no denying that once the current crisis is behind us, where and how people work is going to be much different. The infrastructure built to work during the pandemic will stay and in many cases evolve. For those companies that are willing and able to embrace remote work, there are 2 main models they can use:

  • Fully-Remote: A work arrangement in which all employees operate from a location of their own choosing and interact with colleagues via email, messaging, video conferencing, or CloudApp screen recorder videos etc.
  • Hybrid-Remote: A work arrangement in which some employees operate out of a traditional office environment, while others work remotely some or all of the time.

As remote work grows — the need for remote work tools becomes more apparent. How can teams maintain communication, manage projects effectively, and share work quickly?

The answer is SaaS and remote work tools, like CloudApp.

Communicate and collaborate with CloudApp

CloupApp makes remote work easy and provides you with the freedom to work how you want, without endless emails and constant video calls.

Emails that are so long they could practically be a novel and a calendar full of video calls fill every remote (and non-remote) worker with dread. Save everyone some time and use the CloudApp screen recorder to record a short video message that co-workers can watch (and rewatch) at their leisure.

When extra clarity is needed, CloudApp’s screenshot annotation feature can be used to add arrows, circles, text boxes and more to images and videos, directing attention to specific elements. When you’re ready to send the content to a colleague, you can simply drag and drop it into your email, a Slack Chat, or a Trello Card. The content is automatically uploaded to your private CloudApp library to reference or reuse later.
